Companies nationwide are continually seeking ways to enhance energy efficiency and reduce hefty operational costs—because who wants high energy bills? One solution that has gained significant traction is cogeneration, also known as combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Catalyst Power offers cogeneration systems, owned and operated by us, to save you money on energy efficiency while eliminating high start-up costs such as equipment costs and engineering. We can help you through the entire process from design to installation to maintenance.

We understand that implementing a cogeneration system can seem challenging without the right know-how. That’s why we provide a fully integrated solution that covers every aspect of the project for you.

What Goes into Design and Engineering?

Our journey begins with a thorough assessment of your facility’s energy needs. Our team of experienced experts will work closely with you to develop a custom-sized cogeneration system tailored to your business’s specific requirements. This phase typically takes about two months, during which we ensure that all technical specifications align with industry standards and your business’s goals. FYI: You will need a spacious place to put it! For more information on that and what makes you a good candidate for cogeneration, please refer to our checklist.

The Permitting Process

Navigating the permitting process can be one of the most challenging aspects of installing a cogeneration system. Catalyst Power assumes this responsibility, ensuring compliance with all applicable local regulations and laws. For example, in New York or New Jersey, the permitting process is streamlined and generally takes about 30 days for approval. Our expertise in local regulations means fewer headaches for you and a smoother transition into the construction phase.

How Long Does It Take to Build?

Once the design and permitting are complete, we move onto construction. Depending on your state, this process typically takes between 3 and 6 months, with a total project duration of approximately 12 months from the initial agreement. Our team manages every aspect of installation, ensuring that your system is built to the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Interconnection Is the Key

After construction, interconnection with the local energy grid is crucial for the system's operation. Interconnection physically connects CHP or other distributed generation technologies to the grid, ensuring economic viability (i.e., the ability to purchase and sell power). This phase can take anywhere between 6 to 9 months, during which we coordinate with local utilities to ensure that your cogeneration system is connected and operational without delay.

Ongoing Maintenance

The work doesn’t stop once your CHP system is up and running. Catalyst Power offers ongoing maintenance services to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your system. Regular inspections and maintenance prevent unexpected breakdowns, which is great news for your energy savings. To summarize, here's a typical timeline for a Catalyst Power cogeneration project:

  • Signing your Energy Service Agreement
  • Engineering phase: 2 months
  • Permitting phase: 2 months
  • Interconnection phase: 6 to 9 months
  • Construction and installation phases: 12 months

If your current boiler is approaching the end of its lifecycle, this may be the best time to make the switch! Over time, these cogeneration systems will actually help extend the life of your boiler and HVAC units since they aren’t working as hard.
